Raktima’s father Santosh Kumar, who is in the Indian Air Force, narrates how his wife Rupa Singh first noticed that their one-year-old daughter wasn’t responding to loud sounds. She was 18 months when her parents consulted a doctor who recommended a BERA test, the Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry hearing examination performed on children. Once her deafness was confirmed the couple applied for a cochlear implant under the government’s ADIP scheme that provides monetary assistance for the purchase and fitting of aids and appliances for the disabled.\n\nMeanwhile, Raktima had developed her own sign language which she used to communicate with her family and foiled all attempts to make her talk. She was 12 when she got the cochlear implant, and “the human brain completes most of its development by the age of 6,” says Santosh, explaining why, despite her ability to hear sounds, her comprehension lagged behind. Admitting her to a mainstream school, as the doctor recommended, was no solution because she was memorising lessons without comprehending them. \n\nIn March 2025 Raktima, besides doing her diploma in Fine Arts, started learning ISL. It has caused a sea change in her life. She is thrilled at being able to meaningfully communicate. Rupa too is going to the same ISL class with her and teaching the rest of the family. Raktima intends to do her bachelors in Fine Arts. After entering a Para Yoga competition she won a gold medal in Chandigarh and was ranked among the top 8 in the country! Her parents’ only goal for her is that she should be financially independent and able to take care of all her needs.","Quote":"“मार्च से अब तक मैं इंडियन साइन लैंग्वेज में 700 शब्द सीख चुकी हूँ। मेरी माँ भी क्लास ले रही हैं”","Status":"Published","Video":null,"Website_Content":"जब हमने पिछले हफ़्ते चंडीगढ़ में रक्तिमा के परिवार से बात की, तो उन्होंने हमें बताया कि वो दिवाली के लिए घर को सजाने में व्यस्त थी, हर जगह रंगीन कागज काट कर लगा रहीं थीं। कॉलेज में उन्होंने एक दिया बनाने की प्रतियोगिता में भी हिस्सा लिया था। रक्तिमा (19), जो सुन नहीं सकतीं, उन्हें  हमेशा दूसरे विषयों के मुकाबले कला ज़्यादा पसंद रही है। इसके अलावा, जिस मेनस्ट्रीम स्कूल में वे पढ़ती थीं, वहाँ वे बस अपने पाठ रट लेती थीं और मतलब समझे बिना “कॉपी-पेस्ट” करती थीं, ऐसा उनके पिता संतोष कुमार कहते हैं, जो इंडियन एयर फ़ोर्स में हैं। इंडियन साइन लैंग्वेज (ISL) सीखने से नज़र और समझ के बीच का अंतर कम हुआ है और न सिर्फ़ उनके लिए बल्कि उनके परिवार के लिए भी नए रास्ते खुले हैं।\n \nअफ़सोस की बात है कि रक्तिमा अपने मम्मी-पापा को यह नहीं बता पाईं कि उन्हें स्कूल में क्या तकलीफ़ हो रही है! वे कक्षा  8 के बाद आगे पढ़ना नहीं चाहती थीं और उन्हें समझा भी नहीं पा रही थीं कि क्यों। हाल ही में, जब ISL उनकी ज़िंदगी में आया, तो संतोष और उनकी पत्नी रूपा सिंह को पता चला कि टीचर रक्तिमा के साथ बुरा बर्ताव करते थे और उन्हें क्लास के बाहर खड़ा करके सज़ा देते थे – और यह तब हुआ जब दंपति ने उनसे बार-बार कहा था कि उसे तनाव न दें और “अगर उसे 40 प्रतिशत अंक भी मिले तो हमें कोई दिक्कत नहीं है”।\n \nबधिर बच्चों के ज़्यादातर माता-पिता की सहज प्रतिक्रिया उन्हें सुनने वाली दुनिया के हिसाब से ढालना होता है: उन्हें बोलना सीखना चाहिए, और अगर यह भी काम न करे, तो कोक्लीयर इम्प्लांट लगवाना चाहिए ताकि वे एक 'नॉर्मल' स्कूल में जा सकें। संतोष और रूपा ने भी यही तरीका अपनाया। जब रक्तिमा एक साल की थी, तो रूपा ने एक बार देखा कि जब सो रही बच्ची के पास कोई भारी चीज़ गिरती है, तो वह हिलती नहीं है। उन्होंने उसे और ध्यान से देखा और संतोष से कहा कि उन्हें शक है कि उनकी बेटी सुन नहीं सकती। पहले तो रूपा के डर को दूर करने के बाद उन्होंने भी ध्यान देना शुरू किया। जब उन्होंने बच्ची के पास गिलास गिराया या टीवी की आवाज़ तेज़ की, तो बच्ची ने कोई प्रतिक्रिया नहीं दी। वह डेढ़ साल की थी जब अमला, मध्य प्रदेश, जहाँ संतोष पोस्टेड थे,  वहाँ डॉक्टर ने उन्हें BERA– ब्रेनस्टेम इवोक्ड रिस्पॉन्स ऑडियोमेट्री टेस्ट - कराने को कहा जो सुनने की क्षमता की जाँच है जो बच्चों पर की जाती है।\n \nरक्तिमा के बहरेपन की पुष्टि होने के बाद, दंपति ने सरकार की ADIP योजना के तहत कोक्लियर इम्प्लांट के लिए आवेदन किया। यह योजना विकलांगों के लिए सहायक चीज़ें (एड्स और अप्लायंसेज) खरीदने और फिट करने के लिए पैसे की मदद देती है। इस बीच, रक्तिमा ने अपनी खुद की साइन लैंग्वेज बना ली थी, जिसका इस्तेमाल वह अपने माता-पिता, अपने बड़े भाई सिद्धार्थ रंजन, छोटी बहन नवप्रीति और दादी सरस्वती देवी से बात करने के लिए करती थी। रक्तिमा ने उसे बात करवाने की सभी कोशिशों को नाकाम कर दिया।\n \nसंतोष का आमला से नई दिल्ली ट्रांसफर हो गया, जहाँ उन्हें एयर फ़ोर्स रिकॉर्ड्स ऑफ़िस में पोस्ट किया गया। उन्होंने कॉक्लियर इम्प्लांट के लिए फिर से आवेदन किया और इसे मंज़ूरी मिलने में कई साल लग गए। रक्तिमा को हियरिंग एड लगाया गया और आर्मी हॉस्पिटल में इम्प्लांट लगाने से पहले दिल्ली के आर्मी हॉस्पिटल में चार साल और पुणे के कमांड हॉस्पिटल में दो साल तक स्पीच थेरेपी हुई। यह बताते हुए कि आवाज़ें सुनने की क्षमता होने के बावजूद, रक्तिमा की समझने की क्षमता क्यों पीछे रह गई थी, संतोष कहते हैं, \"लेकिन तब तक वह 12 साल की हो चुकी थी और इंसान का दिमाग 6 साल की उम्र तक अपना ज़्यादातर विकास पूरा कर लेता है\"। डॉक्टर की सलाह के मुताबिक, उसे किसी मेनस्ट्रीम स्कूल में दाखिला दिलाना कोई जादुई हल नहीं था।\n \nइस साल मार्च में रक्तिमा ने फाइन आर्ट्स में डिप्लोमा करने के साथ-साथ ISL में क्लास लेना भी शुरू कर दिया। इससे उसकी ज़िंदगी में बहुत बड़ा बदलाव आया है। वह दूसरों से अच्छे से बातचीत कर पाने से बहुत खुश है; उसके टीचर कहते हैं कि वह दो साल में बहुत अच्छी प्रगति करेगी। रूपा भी उसी क्लास में ISL सीख रही हैं और घर आने पर बाकी परिवार वालों को सिखाती हैं। रूपा कहती हैं, “जब वह बात नहीं कर पाती थी तो गुस्सा हो जाती थी, लेकिन अब वह अपनी बातें शेयर कर पाती है और खुश रहती है।” “मैं उसे सच में जान पा रही हूँ। साइन लैंग्वेज की वजह से ऐसा लगता है जैसे मुझे अपनी बेटी फिर से मिल गई हो।”\n \nनवप्रीति कक्षा 9 में है, सिद्धार्थ कानपुर में कमर्शियल पायलट बनने की ट्रेनिंग ले रहा है और रक्तिमा फाइन आर्ट्स में बैचलर्स करना चाहती है। संतोष गर्व से कहते हैं कि पैरा योगा कॉम्पिटिशन में हिस्सा लेने के बाद रक्तिमा ने चंडीगढ़ में गोल्ड मेडल जीता और देश में शीर्ष 8 में जगह बनाई! वे बताते हैं कि उन्होंने उसका नाम कैसे रखा: “जब वह पैदा हुई तो कर्नल गांगुली ने मुझसे कहा कि आपकी बेटी बहुत सुंदर है, वह रत्न जैसी दिखती है, इसलिए मैंने उसका नाम रक्तिमा रखा।”\n \nदंपति का उसके लिए एकमात्र लक्ष्य है कि वह पैसों के लिए किसी पर निर्भर न रहे और अपनी सभी ज़रूरतों का ध्यान रख सके। और लगातार प्यार और समर्थन से, यह रत्न आने वाले दिनों में और भी चमकेगा।\n\n","State_name":"चंडीगढ़","Display_Order":232}}},
