उन्हें एक हेल्पर को रोज़ 500 रुपये देने के लिए अपने एक्सीडेंट के मुआवज़े का पैसा इस्तेमाल करना पड़ा। 2019 में उन्हें मेडिकल ग्राउंड्स पर फैक्ट्री की नौकरी से निकाल दिया गया और उनकी जगह जुबैदा को नौकरी मिल गई। 2020 में जब जुबैदा का ट्रांसफर (फील्ड गन फैक्ट्री में) हुआ, तो वे अपने होमटाउन कानपुर चले गए। उमर ने शूटिंग की ट्रेनिंग के लिए एक प्राइवेट अकेडमी जॉइन की। मेहताब के 25 साल के बेटे मुमताज अहमद ने अपने चाचा को प्रैक्टिस के लिए ले जाने और उनकी सभी ज़रूरतों का ख्याल रखने के लिए अपनी नौकरी छोड़ दी। 2021 में उमर ने अपने पहले ही कॉम्पिटिशन, नोएडा में 43वीं यूपी  स्टेट चैंपियनशिप में गोल्ड मेडल जीता, और हरियाणा में पहली ज़ोनल पैरा शूटिंग चैंपियनशिप में एक और गोल्ड जीता। 2023 में उन्हें पहले खेलो इंडिया पैरा गेम्स में 11वां रैंक मिला, और मार्च 2024 में नई दिल्ली में पैरा शूटिंग वर्ल्ड कप के लिए चुना गया, जहाँ उन्हें भारत में नंबर 1 और दुनिया में 17वां रैंक मिला।\n \nइन उपलब्धियों के बावजूद, उन्हें सरकार से कोई मदद नहीं मिली है। जिस राइफल का वे इस्तेमाल करते हैं, वह भी उनकी अपनी नहीं है: अकेडमी की है। शूटिंग एक महँगा खेल होने के कारण, उन्हें एक समय ज़ुबैदा के गहने गिरवी रखने पड़े थे। वे कहते हैं, \"परिवार और दोस्तों के सहारे के बिना मैं कुछ भी हासिल नहीं कर सकता।\" जब भी उन्हें पैसों की दिक्कत हुई, उनके दोस्तों ने व्यक्तिगत लोन लिए और कुछ ने तो अपना पूरा वेतन ही दे दिया!
